A Backyard Maternity Storytelling Session in Raleigh, NC
Some of the most meaningful sessions don't happen at a grand location…they happen in the place that already feels like home.
For this maternity storytelling session,
we spent the evening in my clients' own backyard during golden hour, allowing the warm light and familiar surroundings to become part of their story. They wanted their images to feel cozy, elegant, and deeply personal…a collection of photographs that reflected this season of anticipation rather than simply documenting it.
They chose my Extended Storytelling Session, a 90-minute experience designed for couples who want more than traditional portraits. Before the session, we carefully planned the styling and meaningful details they wanted to include. Alongside classic maternity portraits, we photographed thoughtfully chosen keepsakes like a woven basket, fresh flowers, ultrasound photos, baby toys, and other small details that already held so much significance before their little one had even arrived.
Throughout every storytelling session, I naturally capture the quiet details that often become clients' favorite images…the curve of a growing belly, intertwined hands, flowers gently resting against a baby bump, or tiny baby clothes held between expectant parents. For this session, the couple also requested a collection of faceless photographs alongside traditional portraits, creating timeless, artistic images that emphasized emotion, connection, and anticipation.
To make the session even more personal, we incorporated delicate adhesive gems across her baby bump for a few artistic portraits. It was one of those creative details that transformed a simple portrait into something that felt truly unique to their story. Check out my maternity portfolio for that!
One of the reasons they chose me as their photographer was because they wanted a session that felt intentionally curated. Rather than relying on a single ultrasound photo as a prop, we collaboratively envisioned a gallery that reflected their personalities, their home, and the life they are preparing to welcome. Every detail was chosen with purpose, allowing their photographs to tell a story that feels uniquely theirs.
This beautiful family is expecting their little one in September, and I already can't wait to photograph the next chapter of their story during their in-home newborn session. Just like their maternity session, they're envisioning a cozy, intimate atmosphere where the focus is connection, love, and the beginning of life together.
