A Simple Guide for Timeless Portraits
Most families I photograph in the Raleigh area start with the same question: “What should we wear?”
The truth is, the outfits that look best are rarely the ones people stress over the most. The strongest images usually come from clothing that feels natural, moves easily, and doesn’t compete with the people wearing it.
Here’s what actually works in real sessions.
Pick a Soft Color Story, Not Matching Outfits
Instead of everyone dressing the same, choose a handful of colors that feel related- think cream, olive, dusty blue, soft brown, sage, or warm tan. These tones play well with North Carolina light and the local landscapes (fields, tree-lined paths, downtown brick, gardens).
When each person wears a different shade within that range, the group still feels connected without looking staged.
Comfort Shows Up More Than Style
If you’re tugging at a dress, adjusting sleeves, or worrying about a stiff collar, it will show in your posture and expression. Choose pieces you can walk, sit, hug, and play in without thinking about them.
Flowing fabrics, soft knits, and well-fitting basics almost always photograph better than anything that feels special-occasion or restrictive.
Texture Beats Pattern
Busy prints and big logos pull attention away from faces. Subtle texture- linen, knit, soft cotton, light denim- adds depth without distraction. A cream sweater next to a linen dress next to a soft button-down usually looks more interesting than three solid shirts in the same color.
Match the Clothes to the Place
Open fields and parks: softer, lighter pieces that move with the breeze
Downtown or urban spots: slightly more structured layers and clean neutrals
Gardens: light colors and airy fabrics
At home: whatever actually feels like your everyday life (including cozy knits or soft pajamas for little ones)
Small Details That Matter More Than You Expect
Shoes often appear in full-body frames, so skip the bright sneakers unless they truly fit the vibe. Simple boots, clean flats, or bare feet usually look more intentional. Neutral nails, quiet jewelry, and empty pockets help keep the focus where it belongs.
The Real Goal
Your photos should still feel like your family years from now. Trends fade. Connection and ease do not.
